Description
The idea of fishing came upon Goddess as her stomach growled. She’d been dreaming of fish, practically the entire time she was dozing in the sun. Athena, her half mane companion, was laid back, head propped on the slightly shorter female’s back, snorting in her sleep. As Goddess stood, Athena’s head dropped to the ground with a thump. She didn’t seem disturbed by the sudden jarring of her face with the ground. Nightling, a chimeric colored male, looked up at the curly maned female as soon as she stirred. A set of pack mates, Nook and Atlas, were both sitting up and looking towards the mountains, almost seeming to be zoned out.
“I think we should go fishing. I’ve had a hankering for fish since we got here. The lake isn’t too far away.” Goddess spoke up while placing her paw on top of Athena’s head, practically standing on her. The pressure eventually caused her green eyes to open a fraction and look up. “Did you say something about fishing?” Goddess removed her paw and the large female stood up, parting her jaws in a wide yawn, exposing her glittering white teeth. Then, she proceeded to give a very cat-like stretch by arching her back up. Nook looked over at the females.
“Fishing does sound like a good idea.” Atlas quipped as he turned towards the group. NIghtling felt he could find better things to do on a warm day. Namely, finishing sunbathing. But he wasn’t opposed to fishing either. After all, it was always nice to sunbath after taking a dip in icy water. It was warm now with spring on the way. Grass already started poking through the snow in places. In some places where the sun could reach constantly, little flower buds were starting to form. Looking up, the sky was a pristine blue, almost resembling a calm lake. He stood after the thought came to him. “It doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.” He commented.
Athena did a few more stretches, waking herself and her muscles up for the hike to the nearest lake. “It’s warm enough for a swim.” She commented, tongue lolling from her mouth. Goddess trotted forward, between Atlas and Nook who stood and joined the graying female. They walked to either side of her as Nightling came up behind them. Athena lagged behind, her usual hyper attitude dampened by her grogginess. She was half asleep all during the trek. It was amazing that she even made it as far as she had. Her usual sure footing would occasionally get hung up and she’d stumble a bit, waking herself back up.
Goddess lead the way through a rough deer trail. A trail that didn’t seem to be seeing it’s usual deer activity seemed to be low with how overgrown the trail was. The trail opened up to expose a large body of water. It was so immense that it almost seemed more like a small ocean filled with fresh water instead of a lake. Once the group reached the water’s edge, Athena came alive. Her previously drooping eyelids snapped open from the cool burst of wind that brushed against her cheeks. Goddess looked over the shimmering water before stepping back then making a running leap into the icy water.
Nightling joined her next, followed by Atlas, then Nook. Athena followed a bit after them. Stepping into the water then backing out with how chilly it was. After a few moments, she decided the best course of action was to just dive into the water head first. Submerge quickly and the bite of the water would go faster. She took her own advice and jumped into the water with a delighted expression. When she reached the lake bottom, she snapped at the dangling grass, tearing up bits of it before moving on to fish. Goddess was in work mode, swimming around and catching fish. It almost seemed like the water was her true element. She was graceful on land, but she was down right attention grabbing under water. With the ability to turn on a dime after the sneaky fish that go one way then immediately double back.
Athena seemed to have a harder time doing such a thing. When she’d go to turn around quickly, her paws would get trapped in the longer grass, hindering her speedy turn. Get her on land and she was a bullet, water was a whole different story. A glance above her had her pausing. Goddess had already grabbed a fish and was swimming back towards land. The half mane reared out of the water, panting and sucking in air. She was determined to get herself a fish no matter what. With another lung filling breath, she dove back down and tore after the closest fish to her. Of course it escaped.
Goddess returned and was already swimming down another fish. With a bubbly huff, Athena worked even harder. Swimming this way and that way to try and capture one of the scaly little jerks. But her efforts just had her burning her oxygen faster and having to return to the surface for more air faster. The males were doing it right. Nightling, Nook, and Atlas each swam around a small school of fish, bringing them closer together before going amongst the fish and snapping them up. Goddess was single handedly bringing fish in. When she returned to the surface Atlas was also surfacing for air.
“I didn’t know you were so bad at fishing.” He huffed a laugh. Athena snorted water at him. Her brother was the fisher, she was a hunter. “I thought could get it this time.” She grumbled before diving back down, swimming passed Goddess who already had another fish. Atlas rejoined Nightling and Nook, collecting more fish.
‘That’s it…’ Athena thought. ‘If I don’t get one this time, I’m giving up and eating a rabbit or something.’ A fish swam under her nose and she tore after it. The fish darted this way and that, the half maned Tokota staying on his tail. ‘This is it!’ She thought excitedly. She opened her jaws and closed them on… bubbles. The fish escaped. With a gargled and frustrated bark, she swam to the surface and dejectedly moved to land. Goddess approached and dropped a fish at her feet.
“Sorry you couldn’t catch a fish.” Athena took the fish and laid off to the side to eat it. Her usual energy gone. The rest of the group joined her to eat, jostling her good naturedly, slowly bring her out of her funk. “I don’t need to catch a fish…” She finally said after her mood lifted a bit. “They aren’t that great.” She looked off towards the pile the males and Goddess brought in and felt a pang of jealousy for just a split second. “I’m fine. It’s cool. I’ll get over it. Maybe one day I’ll catch a fish of my own.” Her mini pep talk was slowly bringing back her jovial state of mind.
By the time everyone was finished eating, Athena was back to her usual excitable self. “What should we hunt tomorrow?” She yipped. “Bear. I need more of a challenge than fishing.” Nook commented, taking a side long glance at Athena. Her jaw dropped before she turned tail and trotted away. “He was only kidding!” Atlas called. She didn’t respond, but tried not to let her good humor show, holding a charade of annoyance. “Pfft. Screw those fish.” She barked with laughter.
