When his father was gunned down by mobsters, Joseph Cartelli swore vengeance. Not just on the men directly responsible for the murder, but vengeance on the criminal element itself. Which sounds like a good recipe for some Batman-style vigilante fun. But instead got this guy. The Blue Shield.

Through unexplained means, Joey got his hands on some kind of goofy comic book sci-fi belt that could make forcefields. Kinda dopey, maybe, but still pretty effective. The forcefields it created make him all but invulnerable. Bullets, explosions, fire, you name it...he was now immune to getting whacked. The belt also somehow increased Joey's strength, stamina, agility and speed. Whoa, what a stat boost. We take back what we said about that belt being dopey.

Anyway, Blue Shield started his career teaming up with the light-casting mutant heroine and former disco queen, Dazzler. Getting a big head about his skill levels, Joey tried out for the Avengers, but made a pretty terrible showing in front of Captain America and washed out. But not long after he got a gig as the head of security for Project: Pegasus, an important government base that did all sorts of silly science stuff. So maybe he wasn't cut out for the Avengers, Blue Shield ended up making big bucks as a Federal worker. Can't knock that. Pretty good for a guy who seemingly found magic belt.
