Description
Hey, Vectorinos -- we are deep into covering the unfortunate era of Spidey-lore known as The Clone Saga. Nausea is expected…
When Judas Traveler first appeared in Spider-Man’s world, accompanying him, hiding literally in shadows, was the enigmatic being called Scrier. Just as Judas claimed to be centuries old and holding immense, god-like powers, Scrier hinted at being older and even more powerful. But just like the former, the latter was also full of crap.
Scrier would appear, seemingly at random, helping to shoehorn the plot —errr— I mean, advance the storyline, by manipulating the actions of others, via coercion. Like Seward Trainer, Spidercide, Judas Traveler himself, and probably anyone else who needed their nonsensical and baffling actions related to the Clone Saga explained away narratively.
As it turns out, the Scriers were in fact a secret European criminal organization, spun off from an ancient religious sect. The Master Manipulator of the Clone Saga (and many other events surrounding the lives of Peter Parker and Ben Reilly) had infiltrated and gained control of the Cabal of Scriers. Scriers were all normal men given technological gear from their new master that allowed them to seem all-powerful, including the ability to vanish at will (which turned out to be teleportation and active camouflage). Basically legbreakers for organized crime who pretend to be magic ghosts.
The various Scriers (under the guise of a single being) also worked closely with the man called Gaunt, who seemed to be an even closer lieutenant to the Master Manipulator. And as powerful as Scrier first seemed, Gaunt, working as his master’s enforcer, even slew a Scrier. If an old man with tubes on his face can kill you, you probably aren’t very powerful.
As it turns out later, the Cabal of Scrier worshiped/was inspired by an ACTUAL extremely ancient & godlike being called Scrier, who claimed to be older than the Universe itself, the World Devourer Galactus, and even Betty White.
