Description
When the folks in the forums over at Toy News International decided to have a "Coolest Pose" contest, in which people take pictures of their action figures in neato poses, I submitted this little gem. People loved the hell out of it right away, and it's the piece that won me that competition. For those of you out there that aren't action figure savvy, what's meant by "articulation" is "joints". The lines of action figures I collect usually have LOTS of articulation, because I really like to display my figures and give them awesome poses. My favorite Spider-Man, for instance, has around 40 points of articulation, basically giving him almost a complete range of human motion. Eight of those points are his fingers.
People who collect this line of figures and others comparable to it tend to poke fun at lines that don't have all that much articulation. Among those lines is Mattel's comic-based Batman line. The figures of Batman and Robin pictured here both have articulated shoulders, wrists, necks, waists, thighs, and knees, amounting to a grand total of nine points of articulation in the face of Spider-Man's 42 points. Hilarity ensues.
My remark at the forum when I submitted this was:
"Seldom do I ever laugh at my own work, but every now and then, something that I think is just REALLY funny rolls off the top of my head, and I have to laugh at it. And this time, that was Spider-Man's pose, and Batman and Robin's exchange at the bottom."
Fun facts about this image:
- As I said in this and several other comments, this piece won me the "coolest pose" competition at TNI. I think I won because it was just funny, but if someone were to call me on the fact that it's a "Cooles Pose" thread and not a "Funniest one-shot action figure comic" thread, I'd have defended my piece's elegibility by saying that the pose in question was Spidey's behind-the-back flickoff. That move has become something of local legend in my town.
- Contrary to popular belief, I didn't Photoshop the bird fingers in this image. The ones that are flicking Bats and Robbie off are actually articulated and separately moveable from the rest.
- "AFT" stands for "Action Figure Theatre". It's the title I was going to give my action figure comic, which I was GOING to make into a webcomic, but I got too lazy. I even wrote scripts for this comic and got about five episodes into it before I ran out of ideas.
- The back row of characters are Marvel's Sandman, Iron Man, Captain America ("Ultimates" version), Spider-Man, and Deadpool.
- Marvel is awesome and DC can eat its dust.
