Rune had been missing for days. He vanished one day when Mattie left to secure food. Four days and Rune's scent finally reached the air. But...it was coming from a cabin on the other side of the village. Rumor was that the cabin was haunted. Silly humans. But the closer to the cabin one got this day, the heavier the scent of blood got.
What Mattie would fine here? Devistation.

Mattie walked in to see such horror. He fell to his knees and picked up Rune's head, his whole body trembling. He didn't know what to do. He was too shocked, too horrified, too broken to even process this, to even speak.

There was fading warmth slowly feeling from Rune's severed head, proof that he had onlly been dead for a little while. His killer had to still be close. The killed had chopped off Rune's hair and the pile of it was behind the chair his body still sat in. The blindfold around Rune's eyes was tied tightly around, stained a little with his blood. The expression frozen on his face seemed to be confusion and maybe fear as well. He didn't even know when the attack came to end his life.

Mattie looked at Rune's body, anger starting to fuel him. Whoever did this was going to pay. Whoever ended Rune's life was going to die a painful death. He kissed Rune's lips gently before putting it down gently. "I'll be back for you..." With that, he went out, trying to sniff out the killer.

If only Rune was alive. Mattie wouldn't feel sad or angered, wanting revenge. If Rune was alive, he could kiss Mattie back, instead of have Mattie kiss his cold dead lips. If RUne was alive, they could leave together. If only...
Rune's killer was lurking around, a proud grin over their face. The man had lured Mattie to this spot. He moved out when he felt his confidence rise. "Well, well. So ta' rumors were ta' truth? Tat' boy was your mate? Funny. Never tot' tat' a Β Wendigo would mate with a human made monster." The male was dressed all in black, a machete knife in hand, still dripping of blood.

Mattie growled and looked at the man. "You did this to him.. Why?" The pain and anger in Mattie's heart was increased ten fold at the of the machete knife. "He was kind and nice to everyone and you- you killed him! You sick bastard!"

"I killed him to lure you here. Your kind should be dead. I knew if I got your little mate, you would have to come. When I found out he wasn't human but a wold, well, he had ta' die too. Only fair. All you monsters need to die." He swung the blade, flicking the blood off and letting the drops fling against the floor and wall. "But don't worry. Ta' pain was quick. One swing and his head came falling. He didn't even know he was going ta' die. He tat' you would save him. Boo. Now, come and let's play monster." He moved forward, ready to kill Mattie next.

Mattie only saw red. Anger fueled him as his body turned his true form, claws, antlers, fangs, tails, fur, everything. "I'll make you pay!" He growled and and went after him. He's never felt this much hate before, this much anger.

The man grinned at the sight of Mattie's true form, moving out of the way from the beast. "Did your mate see your real form? Hideous. I was wondering why someone so shy and scared like him would want to be with ta' likes of you. So, did you find a way to make him a beast like you? Or was he just some pet you found?" He man took out his hand gun and fired bullets at Mattie. The game have just begun.

Mattie growled at the shots and glared at him. "He was my mate! My everything!" He lunged toward the other and hit him with his sharp claws.Β

"Gah!" The male coughed as his back hit the wall from being struck. He looked down at his arm that was hit with the claws. Growling, he moved the machete back out and swung it, lunging for Mattie to try and pierce the blade through his heart.

Mattie docked down and kicked the others feet, trying to get him to fall. He just needed a chance to get to the others throat. He just needed to bite out his throat.

The male turned, stumbling but went back to fighting, firing off his gun again and using his free hand to swing his machete at Mattie, striking him where he could. He just needed an opening and strike his heart. Then he planned to chop off his head like he did with Rune. "You know, if you were quicker, you could have seen him die. Show have seen his face and when his head rolled right off his shoulders."

Mattie tackled him, grabbing around his waist. He bit and tore at any flesh he could find. He wanted to kill this guy. He wanted to make him pay for what he did.

"Yaaa! Ahhhhhh!!" The man screamed but struggled. Just as Mattie bite at him when he found the room to tear at his flesh, the male swung the machete at Mattie, trying to find a place to stick it in here and there, aiming for the heart but taking what he got. However, the more the man struggled, the more blood he lost before Mattie was able to silence him completely. The hunter didn't get to kill off his prize but sadly, even with his death, Rune was still dead...

Mattie spit out the man's flesh and huffed. He limped back to Rune's body and pet Rune's cheek. Slowly his body turned into his human form as he let tears fall. He picked Rune up, hair and all. He brought Rune home and placed him in his freezer. on a long table Mattie usually used to crave up his food. He placed Rune's head where it's supposed to be and gave him a gentle kiss. "I'm sorry I couldn't protect you.." He locked the freezer from the inside and lay next to Rune. Mattie's body was healing but it was slow. He just hoped he could just fall asleep and stay asleep.

Rune never wanted this to happen. He had wished that their days would have been filled with joy and though each day they had happiness, it had all ended too soon. If only rune had been stronger, then this would have never happened. He was supposed to be a wolf, a creature smart enough to know how to outsmart a Β human but he just could not hurt someone. And now, he had been killed and caused so much pain for Mattie.
This was never supposed to happen.
Rune had promised to complete the mark of mating with Mattie, fulfill it, complete their bond. Rune was supposed to bare Mattie's children. They were supposed to spend days of laughing and being in each other's arms. Rune never even got the chance to tell Mattie everything he felt. He had said he loved him but he wanted to tell him so much more about how the other made him feel. And now, he never will. It was over. Rune was dead. All their dreams...dead. They would no longer kiss each other or gaze into one anothers eyes. They would no longer make each other blush and tease the other, hold and touch, feel the love between them heat their bodies.
No more.
And as Mattie lay beside Rune's body, the freezer making him look paler as he may have gained a little fine ice here and there, freezing solid, the cold air moved as if there was a breeze. Mattie's hair may have moved just a little as he neared a state of his bod shutting down from the cold. Sleep. Before Mattie could fall into the pulling need for sleep, something touched him.
Where had this white breath of warm air come from?
And why did it look like hands reaching out?
Rune was crying from where his soul ended him. His days on this Earth was over with but he did not want to leave Mattie alone. He wanted to stay. His ghost came for Mattie, wrapping his transparent arms around the male. A sad but soft smile over his transparent face. Even in death, Rune wished not to leave.
"Mattie..." A voice whispered and tickled into Mattie's ear. "Liebling...Ich liebe dich." A smile and a kiss against his cheek. "I will always be with you und I will always love you. My darling...I am sorry."

Mattie smiled, hearing Rune's voice, feeling his ghostly warmth, before he fully lost consciousness and everything ended. Damian found them a few days later, after ripping the door off its hinges. He was sad, heart-broken even, but Mattie looked happy. He took the time the bury the together, even asking the doctor the re-attach Rune's head. Their pack was gone and Damian left that land for good.

No one would know for certain if the two were joined together after death but really...how could they not be? Rune's ghost came to keep Mattie company in his last moments and we there to guide him into the afterlife. It did not matter where Rune's soul was supposed to go, he wanted to stay with Mattie. They would be together, no matter what. Even in death, Rune did not want to part his beloved mate. And maybe they could be reborn again? There was no way of knowing. But it was, as it had to be, that they truly were happy wherever they were. Rune and Mattie would feel no more pain, no more sorrow. They could be one all the way into eternity.
No one would ever break them apart again.
