Trigger warning: Mention of death!

The colt still pressed to his side looked up at him and nodded his head with a new eagerness hope shining bright in his young blue eyes. Even with all the pain this little guy had been through he could still smile, still look hopeful and happy even if Casper could see the looming sadness at the edge of his smile, in the corner of his eyes were cold frozen tears had made his dark patch of fur stiff. "That's good, we'll head south then, try to find a spot to wait out the snow" Casper tells the boy who nods again but remind tugged to his side and Casper feels his worry and uncertainty stir. He wanted the best for the boy and wasn't sure he could provide it, he'd never seen a stallion raise foals, in his father's herd mothers raised their foals and his sire only took an interest in certain situations. Casper didn't wanna be like that, didn't wanna see colts and fillies hurt by those harsh standards. Because Casper had no doubt that his father would never approve of the little lost colt by his side, not only because he was a colt and could never become a useful member of the herd but because of his pale color. A mares color....

"So should I keep calling you Snowflake or do you have a better..." Casper doesn't get to finish before the foal looks up and shakes his head "Gwyn, mom called me Gwyn" Casper nods his head at Gwyns words "It's a good name" the stallion agrees as he smiles at the colt before looking around them. The snow falling from the clouded sky was getting heavier and this open clearing wouldn't provide them with much shelter. Casper wouldn't have minded traveling on his own but he wasn't so sure Gwyn would do well traveling in heavy snow... "Let's find some shelter, if we are lucky maybe something to eat to" Casper almost regrets mentioning food with how Gwyn's eyes grow large and hopeful. If he couldn't find any he'd have to tell the boy that there wasn't anything, something which would definitely make him sad again... Casper lightly tussles the boy's forelock before he sets into motion making sure that Gwyn follows him as he set towards the forest. Maybe they could find a fallen tree or something to hide under until the snow stopped. Or a cave, as long as it was abandoned a cave could provide good shelter for the two of them... Maybe even water.

As the pair made it into the forest Casper lead them deeper looking around to try and find shelter as the snow fell from the sky. He could tell that Gwyn was growing tired, and cold. Moving wasn't really what he should be doing, he should be warning up and eating... But Casper had nothing for him to eat and no shelter to warm the boy. Not yet, at least. The massive pointed top of an evergreen peaking through the leafless trees had become his guide as he lead them towards it, its massive size shocked him as it finally came into view in between the baren trunks around it. "IT'S HUGE!" Gwyn exclaimed from beside him as the volt almost dropped his jaw staring at the giant tree with wide eyes. Casper laughed and nodded his head "Yeah, think we can find shelter under it?" he asked looking at the boy who nodded his head eagerly and set into a trot despite his tired and cold body protesting the movement. "Come on Casper!" the boy called and the stallion felt a smile grow on his face, this was the first time the colt had said his name, such a small thing and he was already happy.

As they reached the tree Casper concluded that they could indeed find shelter under it if he crawled under the branches. It looked like it would be a tight fit. But as he finally made it into the sheltered space under the lowest branches he found it surprisingly roomy. "Look at all the grass" Gwyn said as he pushed through the leaves causing snow to fall on him from above "Careful Gwyn!" the stallion spoke louder than intended starling the colt who looked at him wide-eyed with a sense of fear "No, I'm sorry I just don't want you getting cold or squashed by the falling snow" the stallion explained watching the colt slowly making his way under the tree. A sense of carefulness in his steps as he moved away from Casper to nibble at the grass. It hurt, seeing the colt watch him with such worried and fearful eyes as if he thought he'd be yelled at again or kicked out. Casper couldn't help but wonder, but fear what the boy's herd had been like. Maybe like his own, maybe he'd been abandoned to the cold because of his coat or some other trait. "I'm sorry Gwyn, please don't be scared I won't hurt you, I'll never hurt you" he promised which had the colt look at him, hesitation but warmth in his eyes as he made his way closer to the dark stallion. "I'm sorry I didn't mean to make you angry" Gwyn spoke his tone quiet as he swallowed a mouthful of grass green stains covering his nose. "You didn't I'm not mad, I was worried you'd get hurt" Casper explained, and the colt carefully nodded his head, a questioning glance in his eyes as he kept grazing.

"I always made Mom's lead stallion mad" he mumbled quietly looking at the grass. Casper could feel the confusion and worry in his stomach as the boy didn't call the stallion father or sire or something similar but Mom's lead... not his... "Mom said it wasn't my fault and she would always love me and keep me safe but now she..." the colt hiccuped as tears rolled down his face. Casper moved to carefully place his neck over the colt pulling him into a warm embrace "She still loves you, she'll always love you and look out for you even if she isn't here" the stallion told the colt who sniffled and looked up at him "How, she's gone" Casper smiled sorrowfully at the colt before looking into the thick green branches of the evergreen tree "She looks down on us, from among the stars. My mother told me it's the weary last bit of magic left in unicorns that let us become starts and watch over those we love, those whom we left behind" Casper explained as the foal watches him a sense of confusion "Did she make you find me?" he asked and Casper looked at the foal surprised before smiling "Maybe, I don't know how that magic works" the little foal nodded his head seeming to have accepted that idea.

"Do you have anyone in the stars?" Gwyn asked as he stepped away and Casper settled laid down near the tree's trunk. "My little sister, she was sickly and died when I was young" Casper told the colt who lowered his head "I'm sorry," Gwyn said but Casper shook his head "Thank you, but I think she is happier among the stars now" he said which seemed to confuse the colt "She was hurting but you can't hurt as a star, when you leave you body behind there is nothing left to hurt" At least his mom had told him that when he cried for her as a foal. Gwyn seemed to agree as he nodded his head and came to settle down by Casper side. The stallion lightly nudged the foal to lay closer so he could help warm his small frame.

They stayed like this for a while quiet and relaxed, Casper almost thought Gwyn had fallen asleep when the colt suddenly asked. "Do you think this is the wishing tree?" Gwyn craned his head to look at Casper who tilted his head in confusion "Wishing tree?" he asked the colt nodded his head "Yeah, the moms of the herd would tell stories of a big tree that was always green and granted wishes" at his words Casper looked up into the branches. He never heard such a story, he'd never thought this tree any different from other tresses. Of course, it was oddly large but tees grew large as they got older so this one had to be really old. But if the stars were unicorns why couldn't a tree be magic? "Maybe? What do you wanna wish for?" he asked looking down at the colt who looked thoughtful for a moment "I want mom back, but I don't think the tree can give her back" he said leaning against Casper as he hid his head against the stallions fur and Casper nudged his rump carefully "I'm sorry" he mumbled and Gwyn looked at him shaking his head "Maybe it can give you a herd with lots of mares? So you won't be alone?" the foal asked surprising the stallion "Why would you wish something for me?" the colt giggled a bit smiling "Because you saved me and mom said mares make stallions happy, though I don't understand why" Caspers's eyes grew wide as a sense of embarrassment settled into his face. He hadn't expected that to be the subject and he didn't want to have that conversation... not now at least... "I think you'll understand when you get older," Casper said as he avoided the foal's eyes but he could still hear Gwyn giggle "Mom said so to" Casper could feel the smile on his lips widen as he shook his head and looked back at the colt. "Maybe we can wish some for mares, someone to help me take care of you and help lead you to safety if I ever have to protect us from big bad things" Casper was mostly just playing along but the idea of building a herd didn't sound all that crazy at that moment. Not with a foal pressed to his side. Now when considering he needed help raising the boy and keeping him safe. "But not a whole herd, that may be too much," he said, as much as Casper liked the idea he wasn't sure he was ready for a whole herd yet... that seemed like a lot of women to keep happy and satisfied... and he wasn't sure how or if he could do that.

Gwyn giggled and looked up into the branches of the tree "Wishing tree, wishing tree we wish for mares to keep us happy and keep me safe, make them kind and warm and fuzzy like clouds and sweetgrass!" the foal chanted before hurryingly adding "But not too many! Maybe one or two?" he said looking at Casper who had to hide a laugh as he nodded his head "Wishing tree wishing tree hear our wish" he chimed in earning him a wide smile from Gwyn who nuzzled against him looking into the green branches with anticipation. It was kinda cute and Casper really couldn't bring himself to tell the colt that mares likely wouldn't drop out from the green branches just because they chanted some wishing rhyme.
