Description Note: the text below is spoiler heavy, including the ending of Pacific Rim. If you haven't seen the film yet, wait till you do and don't read what is below. I won't accept anyone crying about the description spoiling the film

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where Hussar and Virital expected to encounter a Kaiju was standing a tall, roughly humanoid figure, shining in the bright sun. The twin crews gasped in amazement, when they realised that the strange intruder is a Jaeger - in a state of horrific disrepair, right hand seemingly missing, right leg severely damaged, and Kaiju claw marks all over its hull.
- That's a Mark 1.2 Jaeger - said one of Virital's pilots, Juris. - What the hell is it doing out there?
- I have no idea - replied Andrzej from the Hussar's cockpit. - But don't let your guard down. I haven't seen any of these since...
He did not finish. As he was saying, what seemed to be a large pile of seaweed on Jaeger's right hand suddenly split into three tentacles, each ended with a sucking piece similar to that of squid. And when they looked closely at the Jaeger's leg it turned out that similar appendages are keeping the shattered structure together.
Everyone, both in cockpits and in the Shatterdomes, went silent.
- Well - Jacek eventually expressed what everyone was thinking, - that is new.

Before the prototype Jaeger built in Germany for PPDC was retired, other countries were given a chance to study its structure and come up with their own solutions to the problems of the machine. Russia used this knowledge during the construction of Cherno Alpha; while USA studied Jaeger for so long and spent so much time on building their own version that by the time it was finished, it was considered Mark II Jaeger. It was named Howler Defiant.

Jaeger's basic body and head were left more or less identical, but lighter alloys were used, giving Howler greater agility. Artillery armament was replaced with newly developed energy weapons (Tesla Coil Hand was considered for some time, but was eventually discarded), which were more efficient against the monsters. Cockpit protection was excellent - no cockpit breach incidents were noted during Howler's service.

Howler's Kaiju kill count reached 5 monsters of classes 1-3. Its pilots became world-famous and surpassed every celebrity. However, because of their fame they eventually grew arrogant and overconfident. And fortune favors brave, not reckless. A tragedy was now just a matter of time.

When it became obvious that the only way to stop Kaiju from coming was the destruction of Pacific portal, a team of four Jaegers was assembled to go deep beneath the Pacific and drop a nuclear charge into the Breach. Among them were Cherno Alpha and Howler Defiant. Throughout their mission, Howler's pilots made endless remarks that they could finish this job by themselves and that the others are just an unneccessary weight they have to take care of. Cherno's pilots even suggested to drop them into the portal with the bomb, but when they reached the portal, the jokes and remarks ended abruptly when they were attacked by several category 4 Kaiju. Despite their boasting, Howler quickly run into trouble when the Kaiju chose him as a main target of their attacks. Two other Jaegers were destroyed already and the commanders ordered both Cherno and Howler to fall back. But it was too late; Howler was dragged away by the monsters, and Cherno's crew had no other option but to save their own machine and the warhead they were carrying.

Howler's demise was avenged years later when Striker Eureka and Gypsy Danger arrived there with the same warhead Cherno failed to deliver, but as it turned out, it was not the last time the black-and-gold Jaeger was seen...

Intrusion
On one fine day, an IT technician from PADC noticed that someone from the outside has connected to the Atlantic Shatterdome data base. However no files were copied, erased or otherwise altered. Investigation showed that whoever entered the system was mostly interested in Jaeger's technical data, such as their armament and weak spots. Upon hearing about the incident, Anton Lazurescu (pilot of Draculea) jokingly suggested that North Korea or other rogue state is now building an army of Jaegers to conquer the world. Little did he realise that he was not far from truth.

All of a sudden, three Jaegers - from Spain, Portugal and France - were lost during Atlantic missions outside European shores. Such an unexpected loss severely weakened PADC, which was now limited to three Jaegers, from UK, Germany and Benelux Union, which shared their Jaeger in a fashion similar to Baltic States. Therefore PADC asked IDC to share their Jaegers with them if neccessary. Now Hussar and Virital were to help counter Kaiju in North Sea, and Ataman, Draculea and Mulniya protected Mediterranean as well.

Several Kaiju incidents took place and none resulted in a total loss of a Jaeger. However the Benelux and German Jaegers were damaged severely during their battles and had to underwent repairs. So when another Kaiju was reported to be heading towards North Sea Hussar and Virital were called to help the British Jaeger, Ark Royal, fending it off.

As the Baltic Jaegers were heading towards their targets, a distress call was sent by Ark Royal, alerting them that the British Jaeger is in deep trouble. However communication was lost before they could learn more. The Kaiju now headed towards Nederland shore, threatening to enter the Benelux Shatterdome where an inactive Jaeger was stationed. Therefore Hussar and Virital were diverted south-west to block its path.

They waited two miles offshore, expecting - as they later admitted, quite nervously - to meet the Kaiju that has already disposed four Jaegers single-handedly. But what emerged from the water shocked them completely. It was not a Kaiju - it was another Jaeger. Old, massive, looking as if it was carved out of a single block of steel - there was no doubt it's an early generation machine which went out of use years ago. As everyone was watching in sheer amazement, the unexpected newcomer attacked Hussar.

The two Jaegers clashed in vicious fight, and while technological advantage was on Hussar's side, the strange appendages on Jaeger's hand severely damaged his components. With his Chain Sword and Thermal Claws disabled, Hussar - despite aggressive counter-attacks by Skolimowski brothers - succumbed to the black Jaeger. Virital's pilots watched this in disbelief. Hussar was an oldest Jaeger in European Defence Force, yes, but it was considered by many to be top Jaeger in Europe, with second highest Kaiju kill count in IDC (one less than Draculea). Nevertheless, Virital stood bravely against the mighty opponent, even though it costed him his left arm and a massive scar on the chest. Suddenly, a German Jaeger appeared on the battlefield, its reparations recently completed and their pilots determined to save their colligues. Jaegers from Scandinavian Defence Corps were also launched and were on their way to the combat zone. As if sensing that he won't be able to win a five-on-one combat, the black Jaeger dived under surface and disappeared, leaving two Jaegers heavily damaged and one destroyed completely.

Skeletons in the Closet
The battle of Netherlands sparked a real storm. The European nations demanded revenge on the rogue Jaeger for destroying or damaging six machines. At the same time some started to question if other Jaegers can rebell in a similar fashion. However, that was out of the question. Video footage was shared with other nations, including Pan-Pacific Defence Corps. There, the Americans recognized the attacker - it was Howler Defiant, a Jaeger lost years ago during the first assault on the Breach. Or so it seemed it was lost.

Dr Geiszler was called to Europe for consultation. He brought Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori with him, the only two people to visit Kaiju's world and return. Upon inspecting the footage and parts of organic mass cut off by Hussar during the fight, he came up with an astonishing theory.

As Howler and other two Jaegers destroyed during the first assault on the Breach were never recovered, Gieszler concluded that they were taken into the Kaiju world and possibly studied by the Kaiju's creators. He also expressed his fear that some of the crewmen could have been alive during the incident and became subjects as well. When asked if that's possible, Geiszler responded that altough Kaiju's masters technology was based on organic materials, it was not impossible for them to study artifical systems such as Jaegers; an opposite of IT technician who uses his computer to learn about biology. Geiszler then revealed that the Kaiju creators must have blended the wrecks of Howler Defiant - and possibly other Jaegers lost then as well - with Kaiju tissue, in an attempt to use Jaeger's technoogy against humanity. When asked how to counter such a threat, Geiszler answered coldly:
I believe pilots are still there somewhere. Controlled by the aliens, no doubt about that, but they are still human. And human are far more delicate than Jaegers. We need to reach them somehow, and kill them.

While Geiszler's theory could not be proven by a solid evidence, it was taken as a basis for the next battleplan. As soon as Hussar and Virital were operational again, they were to team up with German Jaeger and Scandinavian Defense Corps in order to drag Howler Defiant into a trap. Then, with the rogue Jaeger pinned down, an assault team would be launched inside him, with a task of capturing or, in case of resistance - kill the pilots. Some doubted if this mission will succeed, but no one backed down - everyone wanted to avenge their colligues killed or injured in fighting with Howler Defiant.

Operation Wolfhunt
Since all attacks took place in the Atlantic Ocean or North Sea, Task Force North - as it was called - was located where the last battle took place, near Netherlands Satterdome. To the disappointment of Hussar's pilots, they were informed that their machine won't be able to take part in battle, because it was not repaired yet. But to the surprise of everyone, Mediterranean Defence Corps raised an alert - Howler was spotted heading towards Greece and then towards Black Sea. What he was up to was not clear, but there was no time to waste - nor to relocate the whole Task Force North, only the assault team. Three Black Sea Jaegers - Ataman, Draculea and Mulniya - were dispatched towards Bosphorus Strait to encounter Howler.

Mulniya was the first to reach the rogue Jaeger, and stood bravely in its path. The battle turned into a stalemate - Howler could not hit the agile Bulgarian, while Mulniya's weapons were not enough to cut through Howler's skin. But eventually, Mulniya gained an upper hand - he paralyzed some of his systems with his Tesla Coil Hand. However as soon as he tried to pierce his head, Howler suddenly rose to life, grabbed Mulniya and tossed him into Bosphorus Bridge. Mulniya became entangled in bridge's lines and it seemed he'll become Howler's fifth victim.

Then, Draculea and Ataman managed to reach Stambul via airlift and encountered the black Jaeger. Combined attacks of agile Draculea and Ataman's powerful armament slowed Howler down long enough to let the assault team reach the combat zone with jets. Ataman's pilot, Vitaliy, ordered Draculea to help Mulniya out of the cables, while he himself started to circle Howler and force him towards the bridge. When he saw Draculea and Mulniya withdrawing from his path, he jumped towards Howler and pushed him into the bridge by himself. Now, it was Howler who could not get out of the lines. Assault team was launched and they entered the half-Jaeger half-Kaiju by emergency hatches.

However before they could move towards the cockpit, the lines snapped and Howler attacked Ataman, ripping one of his arms off and launching him into the air. The impact knocked Vitaliy unconciouss and the other pilot, Boris, had to perform emergency neural bridge collapse to prevent a neural overload. Draculea, having escorted the damaged Mulniya away, attacked Howler all by himself. Elena later remarked this was one of few moments in her life when she saw her father serious and concentrated. Draculea fought bravely, but Howler proved to be too much for a single Jaeger. Draculea was about to pierce Howler's power source, when one of the tentacles grabbed its head and ripped it clear off its base. Draculea's body dropped into the water, and Howler proceeded to crush the cockpit he was holding, with Anton and Elena still inside...

All of a sudden, a burst of energy hit Howler from behind, forcing it to drop Draculea's cockpit and allowing its pilots to use emergency launch system. Howler turned around to see Hussar - still bearing scars from their last encounter - being dropped into the Bosphorus by helicopters, smashing its fists together in a provocative gesture. Engaging the Jaeger's audio systems, Skolimowski brothers - thirsty for revenge after their last defeat - announced that now "they are going to go Vienna on your ass".

But then Hussar recieved a message that the assault team has already entered Howler and that they cannot go directly for the cockpit or damage Howler in any other way, or they risk killing the soldiers inside. Uttering only "Fun-spoilers" through their mics, Hussar pilots engaged Howler, but tried to aim for the organic parts instead of the Jaeger itself. What other Jaeger pilots were not aware of was that Hussar was not repaired completely and some of its systems were still inoperational - including Thermal Claws. Hussar therefore had to rely on Chain Sword and bare fists. Initially he had an advantage of surprise, but surprisingly Howler's original armament proved to be operational. Hussar's wings were damaged, limiting his mobility. Howler approached crippled Hussar and grabbed his head, intending to crush it with his bare fist. When cracks started to appear on Hussar's visor, Jacek Skolimowski suddenly radioed the mission control:
- You told us not to go for the head, right?
- Affirmative, Hussar.
- Well then.
Hussar's arm swung, and the Chain Sword went right through Howler's damaged leg, severing the organic elements holding it together. The rogue Jaeger suddenly dropped alongside Hussar, and that was exactly what its pilots waited for - with another powerful hit, they severed the whole head from Howler's body, ensuring that the assault team - and the pilots - are intact. While the organic elements on Howler's body were still squirming as if in agonal convulsions, Hussar marched towards his comrades, holding Howler's head like a trophy. At the same time, assault team informed them that they have reached the pilots.

Aftermath
When they placed the head in the Mulniya's Shatterdome, the pilots were taken out and it became apparent that Geiszler's fear that they became subjects along with their Jaeger were true. Their bodies was severely damaged, and in some areas it was replaced with foreign tissue - later determined to be identical to that of Kaiju. The pilots were determined to be alive, but after they were removed from their Jaeger, they stopped to react to outer stimuli. Geiszler expressed his doubt if they'll ever be able to recover.

Meanwhile, Howler's body was to be cleaned of Kaiju tissue and scrapped, to the Geiszler's limitless grief, who wanted to investigate how the Kaiju creators managed to fuse organic and artifical materials into a single, horryfing being that managed to severely weaken European Defence Force. He reminded the high command that three Jaegers were dragged into the portal, who were one generation better than Howler Defiant, and that means they can appear at any moment, so they need to know what is the most effective way to counter them. His pleas not to destroy Howler were listened and he was appointed a chief of research team who studied the bizzare Jaeger-Kaiju amalgamation.

With every single Jaeger from Intersea Defence Corps heavily damaged (altough none beyond repair) and most of their crewmembers injured, Mediterranean and Scandinavian Defence Corps agreed to respond to Kaiju attacks in Baltic and Black Sea regions. As for the pilots, most of them enjoyed their stay in the warm, Mediterranean sanatoriums, where instead of healing their wounds they prefered to go sight-seeing, drinking and partying, proving that the Jaeger pilot's job isn't half as bad as it may seem...

Kind of. Cherno Alpha and Howler Defiant share many components such as hull and head gear.
