I've tried wire crochet before, but I could never get the tension right. My wire would usually bend too much, or just snap outright.

What metal and size wire did you use? Some are so much harder to use than others.
Copper is quite malleable, brass is even better to work with.
Plated wires tend to snap if the temperature drops, you really have to maintain warmth as you work.
Of course, kinks in the wire are hell! But not impossible to overcome.
I have yet to work with sterling silver, I just ordered a batch of 295 wire so... I'm hoping it will be easier to use than plated.
My wire crochet skills definitely get better the more I practice, you should keep at it!
