Excerpt from "The Trial"
(chapter 7 - Plea)
How's heart nearly stopped in panic at the emotion he saw burning in the prince's eyes. It wasn't malice or hatred, or even rage. What he saw there was far more frightening and dangerous. It was pain: the pain of a loss so poignant that it would drive this young man to do the unthinkable...and simply regret it later.
"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't kill you now, take my uncle, and leave," the prince rasped agonizingly.

Thanks! I have to admit, that of all the scenes i've illustrated so far, this one turned out the best in my opinion. It's certainly the one i am most proud of.

It's a pity we don't see more of Zuko's face. The emotion described in the passage is something I'd love to see visually depicted (not to mention a huge challenge for any artist...so I guess I don't blame you for framing the picture this way).

Actually, the challenge of trying to capture Zuko's expression never really occurred to me.
This was simply the only way i ever imagined the scene. In my mind, the look on How's face was what always captured my imagination, and the detailed description of what he saw in Zuko's eyes was really only meant to serve as a way of conveying How's fear.
Maybe if i ever find a spare moment (haha!) i'll do another version of this...

The fire dagger looks really a lot like fire! How's expression looks really realistic.

I'll admit to having cheated a little on the blades (both the physical dagger & the fire one) and the background. All were pulled from screenshots/photos and then modified/filtered in separate layers to achieve the proper look for the illustration.
The fire dagger was the trickiest though. I needed it to be semi-transparent and bright enough to look like a light source. Then I had to go back in and add Blending Options to the layer to give it the right glow effect.
But all in all, i think it turned out well.
