Description
Now; everyone knows I work with photos and that I composite, and some people know I draw from time to time, and a few know I've dabbled in 3d modeling and rendering. But who knew I had vector skillz as well? What's next, ASCII? Ha, I play Devil May Cry 3 like a goddamn artist, if that counts as another digital media?Actually I mostly only use my vector skills for design work, pay some bills that way, it does not have the flow I like when I'm making my art. Which is why you never see it here in the scrapbook. This image above is _part[s] of_ a prestige logo for a new personal project, this part is about 95% done I think mostly it needs more detailing and some color balancing. you can see from the target design that the swords supporters and one ribbon are what's missing right now. I've been working on it for a long time, a lot of preproduction.
I used photoshop to combine the rasterizations from three different .ai files which make up a half head, then used photoshop duplication to make a full head along the axis line, and down sized it. Otherwise it's all math kids, vector is the bomb. This product brought about a very rare occasion, [that almost never happens outside Devil May Cry], when I impressed myself. If you know vector, you know why I would guess.
[update sep 1st; added more details and the shield, note the feather upgrade compared to the old version.]

Created with Illustrator 10 in Mac OSX,
with Wacom, & with reference to my own raster sketches.

MOAR! i demand more awesomeness!
Seriously though. Your simple yet crazy detail is amazing. Looks like I should be interviewing you as to why you do your vector art this way And I just might... If your interest

Thanks a lot I'll see what I can do about posting more.
I pretty much learned how to shade with gradients as I did this, you can see the style change as I improve on the piece [smiles] A lot of time and trial and error on this bad boy
I don't really think I'm all too qualified for interviewing, I'm not much of an illustrator/drawer to be honest that's never been where my talent has been. Compared to a lot of vector artist's I can't draw my way out of a paper bad. But if you are desperate for people I'd be happy to do it, you could probably do worse I suppose . [laughs]

you can see the different styles... From the sword handle to the ribbon. A pretty big difference. But all that adds to texture and gives everything an unique feel.

Yah I know, time is the problem Mostly do client work which I can't post in vector, very little free time to do 'the real shit' like this only have time for sketches

damn, damn, damn. I type up this huge-ass comment and the page randomly reloads on me. it started something like:
holy crap. holy, holy, crap.
...I bet you write heartwrending poetry too. and are good at math, and science, and .. -everything-! oh my god. Please don't tell me you're a master composer too, because that is just.. not fair.
(niehh hehhehehe.. comp just reloaded again.. but I copy pasted, so take THAT! okay, back to the comment)
The overall design is really cool. I love how you duplicated it and made it small, in black, on top.. it gives the image alot more depth. Its such a solid, powerful peice.. the tribal + oriental mixture is really weird, in a good way. I've heard your explaination already, but can't help wanting to wail--why is this a scrap?!! ach, if my deviations were half as good as your scraps..

The musical talent in the family all went to my sister who is as good at piano as I am with a camera [she happens to be gifted at languages, and science, and dressage as well, lol]. Now if my kid brother just grows up to be an author my family could rule the art world, [laughs]
Well like I said, this is only a small part of the final design. I've been putting a lot of work into the design, I'm hoping it end up very powerful when it's done... The black version is one option for rendering at small size, because at business card scale for example all the details in the color version will be lot and you want something with high contrast for impact.
I learned more about vector masking and blending and gradients from working on this head then I ever knew before. I was learning so much in a given day, that parts of the design don't match because I'd improved so much [laughs] For example the newest part, the metal plates on the side of the helm with the stars, almost look like a 3d renders and don't match with old parts like some of the feathers.

haha. better than my family--my sister can do everything I can, but better.
Yes, but it works.. you kept everything relatively unified. It totally looks like you did it on purpose, and I think the drawn, stylized way the feathers look only adds to it. Making everything look rendered would be a bit overkill, I think.. you have to think of how it looks small as well as big; don't want to clutter it up

Really? Then wth am I talking to you for instead of her [That was an awful joke! sry]
Well, this [link] is the basic sketch that I started with as a guide, converting that to the level of this head is going to be a long and interesting task. The core logo is the swords [link] , but rest can be added in in stages for prestige printing [posters, signage, etc].

she's kind of in china with a bad internet connection, so you'll have to make do with talking to me
D: -jaw drops some more- you know, I think I'm gonna have to do the holy crap routine again.. jeesus man! you call that a sketch?!

Well yah that's a sketch, in comparison to the large raster head which I was drawing for three days, or the head which I vectored in like a week and a half. [laughs] It's a shadow of things to come, but the core idea is there.

Thanks, combining Western heraldry design principles with eastern content is really curial to the final design.
You ever try vector? You like math 'cus you do fractals, might be worth giving vector a try.

I have illustrator but it isn't installed on my computer. I took a really great class in vector at the community college. I might get back into it sometime, now that i see the cool things that can be done with it. a vector image can be any size too. huge on the side of a building or tiny for a business card.
