Description
Through the blinding storm, Sam’s eyes darted nervously across the blackness of the tree-line that lay in front of him. He stood atop the town wall, clutching his rifle and shuffling uncomfortably in his full plate armour, the rain battering against it, deafening him and drowning out the sounds of the night. He still hadn’t got used to the weight, and stood slumped over, struggling to keep himself upright, but still staring ahead at the forest, eyes glazed with fear.A hand suddenly pulled his shoulder back and he yelped in surprise, turning to see his captain beaming down at him, a confident smile spread across his face. “It’s a beautiful night for it isn’t it? Your first day on the job. Id say it sets the mood nicely…” He shouted over the storm, having to pull Sam close just so he could be heard. He turned towards the forest, his cocky expression suddenly falling into a serious stare. “Those freaks should be crawling their way here soon” He shot a look towards Sam “You sure you can handle yourself yet? This isn’t training anymore kid, this is the real thing, you mess up here, your done, no retries, no rematches.” Sam shook himself out of his stunned expression and stood straight, looking his captain in the eye. “Sir, I’m ready” The Captain knelt on the edge of the wall, looking down at the 20ft drop and cradling the rifle in his arm. He smiled again, even wider this time “Good, because if your not, your body’s going straight over the wall to distract those puppies.”
He strode past Sam, bumping his shoulder out of the way, but Sam didn’t even seem to notice, staring ahead blankly and gulping hard. He turned towards the forest again, eyes filled with fear.
A pair of gold glowing eyes stared back.
Another. Then another. The once black tree-line was now filled with glittering, glowing eyes from within the darkness, staring ahead at the wall, towards Sam. He looked to his left and right, and saw his regiment readying their rifles, swords and explosives, aiming them over the walls, determined looks in their eyes. “We cant let them breach the walls! To do so means the death of the entire town and your families! Ready your weapons!” The powerful bellowing of the captain was barely audible over the storm. Sam stared back at his own weapon, and snatched it up, aiming in the same direction, shaking it a little in his hands.
There was a moment of stillness, as the only sounds heard was that of the rain. Then suddenly, it was broken with the gnashing of teeth and growling that sounded like a pack of rabid dogs or wolves, as the shadowy silhouettes burst from the darkness, looking like a black sea crashing its waves against the walls as they attempted to climb up one another. The sounds of the rain mixed with the noise of gunfire and explosions as they lit up the dark night over the town’s walls...
