Silently I pushed my keys into the front door’s lock and turned it, hearing the sufficient click, and let the door creak open slowly by itself.

I absolutely dreaded what my mother’s reaction was to be. I mean how would I react if my hypothetical child was only half-human?

Sighing, the heels of my shoes clacked on the hard wood floor as I entered the house. The lights were all off, except for the kitchen lights where you could here the hushed tones of my mom speaking into her cell phone.

Trying to ignore the nauseating feeling in my stomach, I slipped through the doorway and into the kitchen, falling directly into my mother’s line of vision. The response was almost instant, as she stopped mumbling to the phone and it fell from her hands, landing onto the wooden floor with a loud smacking sound. At the same time, my mother’s eyes widened and she took a step back, as if to protect herself from a threat.

That response alone told me that I was unwelcome. She didn’t even need to say anything, in fact I didn’t even let her get the chance to say anything as I simply ran to my room, locked the door, and grabbed a large gym bag out of my closet. I cleaned out my drawers full of clothes and dumped them into the bag, tears threatening to overflow onto my cheeks. I then cleared the top of my dresser that was cluttered with my make-up, hair accessories, hair straightener, and other stuff into my bag.

There was no “Angel! Angel I’m sorry! You just surprised me! Come out of there Angel! We can work it out! It will all be okay!” from my mother. I tore my eyes away from the door to put everything else that was meaningful in my pathetic life into my pack. I then turned to my radio that was sitting on my nightstand and turned it up really loud, so as to hide the sounds of my cries and footsteps. Grabbing my purse that held my money, only something around twenty dollars was held in it, then crawled under my bed to retrieve my secret stash of money. I counted it out, teardrops staining the green paper. About one hundred and ten dollars. Only one hundred and thirty dollars to get me from here to somewhere safe. Somewhere I’ll be accepted. I thought, biting my lip so as to prevent a whale of emotional pain to come out of my mouth. I then deposited the money into my purse, and snatched up my bag along with my purse. Then I opened the window and threw the stuff out of it, hoping nothing would break as it landed on the ground. Without a second glance, I then jumped out of my window after it, picked it up, and ran. Everything was confusion, but one thing was sure, I was never coming back.

And that’s how I ended up at a gas station next to the highway with all my possessions, one hundred and thirty something dollars, and looking like hell. Saying that I got some confused looks would probably be the understatement of the year. A guy actually approached me with the business card of his old therapist saying “I looked like I needed a little guidance” and how he had been “exactly like me at that age.” I took the card with a nod of thanks, then immediately threw it into the garbage when he had gotten in his car and left the gas station.

Something in my mind tried to connect as I stared with dry eyes (my tears had long ran out) at the white card that lay on top of bags, drinks, and other such trash. Card, card, card, my brain repeated to itself, trying to remind me of something I’d missed. It seemed like a lost cause, as I really wasn’t thinking quite straight, but finally I got it. I knew where I was going to go, what I was going to do. For now at least.

I dug the card out of my pocket, along with a couple quarters, and fed the phone booth next to the gas station. There was an answer on the second ring.
