Description
This illustration is one of seven each featuring one monster from Serbian / Balkan mythology. Each illustration also contains a short text (the name of the given monster in Serbian, and translation into German and Latin) scanned from an old serbian dictionary first published in 1818.
This was one of the art projects at my fourth year et Uni.
The Vampire is one of the original serbian/balkan mythological creatures, and the only one that became known world wide.
Even today, there are people in remote parts of Serbia who believe in vampires!!!
But, just so you know, the serbian vampire is very different from the ones described in novels and films!
The vampire rises from the grave searching for victims, thirsty for their blood. One's he drinks it all, he becomes fat, bloated and red. Only then does he return to his grave. The Vampire always wears his funeral shroud, as it gives him strength and protection. He also goes back to terrorise his remaining family and neighbours, if he has any unresolved grudges. He would brake furniture, slaughter yard animals, and choke the living in their beds. He can even go back to his widow's bed... It is believed that if she gets pregnant, she will give birth to a boneless child...
