The area was known for having creatures that were 'far more than ordinary'. Word in small towns near the eerily still woods was that different beings lived there, and it started to grow a reputation of being more dangerous than it appeared. Towns folk rarely stepped foot in fear of that unknown.
One cold incredibly foggy morning in the middle of October, the thicket near the center of the forest lay just as quiet as any other morning.... save for a single deafening gunshot that echoed out into the chilled air, reaching the small towns nearby.

Three figures stopped suddenly as the gunshot rang out. All looking in the direction the shot had come from, then looking to each other. "I thought no one came in this forest." Dorian said, looking to the other man.
"They don't. Hunters must be going through to make sure it's safe." Quinn said, adjusting her red scarf around her neck.
"Or we have a poaching problem again." the pale skinned man said. He drew a finger back through his brown hair, tucking it behind his long pointed ears. "Good thing I brought my good arrows."

Some birds had been startled in the thicket, and started making a bit of a racket as they flew off from the tall autumn grass. Then the forest was still once more.

The elf looked to the birds, then drew the long, decorative wooden bow from the back of his jacket. "I'd say we start heading that way." he said.
"Lead on, Ranger. You did bring the sleep arrows, right?" Quinn asked.
"Of course." he said, then began carefully and quietly leading them towards whatever scene lay ahead.

Still and silent the morning remained, until a large crow flew to one of the bare branches above their heads. It gave a couple low caws from the back of its throat and it flashed them a knowing look with its small black eyes.

The crow hopped a couple times on its branch, then dove down ahead of them. It glided low to the ground and out into the thicket. Near the opposite edge where a couple taller trees stood, it circled and settled on a lower outer branch, looking back to the three.

Ranger followed it first, then stopped just before the trees and thicket. Dorian moved ahead of him, looking around at the thicket. "You sense that too?" he asked.
"Something's close by." Quinn said.

There was a heartbeat coming from a particularly thick area of grass, and it was accelerating the closer they got. It wasn't small enough to be a woodland animal, but it also wasn't big enough to be an adult human. The crow flew away once it had directed them this far.

Ranger kept a look out for any humans or hunters that may have been around. Footprints, broken branches, anything that might warn them ahead of time. Dorian meanwhile moved past him and carefully moved towards the heartbeat. Moving quietly, but not so quiet he'd startle whatever was hiding.

When he drew closer, the heartbeat climbed. Some of the thick golden grass rustled about and stopped. Some tracks led toward the area, and away. They were made by what looked like the hooves of a fully grown deer. Smaller tracks accompanied them, although they didn't lead away like the other tracks did.

Dorian carefully moved into the grass more. Gently moving the grass back to try and find where the dear might bed down. He didn't want to startle whatever they might find, or disturb the home in case the larger one came back.

When he got far enough into the grass, a little brown fluffy head of hair that was visible for a split second ducked down to hide.

A child's face peeked cautiously from the grass. Two big dark eyes stared up at Dorian, and as the cover was parted he was revealed to be a half-deer creature.
The bambi had been crying. "Who are you? Where did you come from?" His voice shook as he stared at the man.

Through the forest the adult deer tracks continued. It had been moving very quickly, leaping dead trees and clearing streams with ease. Further into the woods the smell of blood lingered.

Dorian knelt down and made himself comfortable on the ground. "We'll stay here with you, just to make sure you're safe. What's your name?" he asked.
Ranger followed the trail more carefully as he got closer. Moving into the trees as he began to fear he was getting closer to the hunter's recen't kill.

Bobby blinked up at her, momentarily distracted away from his worrying. He looked between the two. "Are you human? You look human... but don't smell human." he asked, visibly a little confused.
The deer tracks ended abruptly, where suddenly a few sets of human prints entered in the mix. Some of the grass and dirt had been bloodied, and the group of tracks led off closer to the edge of the forest. Then a truck started up.

"We're... half human." Quinn said. "We're vampires. But, good vampires. We don't like to hunt for our food. Too much work." she said with a smile.
Ranger frowned a bit as he seen the blood, then took to the trees a bit faster to try to get within sight of the truck.

The bambi moved his legs under himself and lifted up to stand. Bobby looked over the tall grass, worried about coming out into the open. He looked up at Quinn. It was clear on his face, he didn't know what vampires were. "I'm kind of half human too... I guess that's, obvious." He said looking down at his hooves. He normally wasn't this close to human-looking people.
Three poachers finished packing up their pickup, slamming their doors shut as the driver started them down the dirt road.

A little. It's not often we come across creatures that are half human like us. Do you live out here in these woods?" Quinn asked.
Ranger hummed and made a face. He looked to the path the truck was taking, then raced forward to try and get ahead of the truck a bit. If he could find something to block the path, he could stop them to see just what they managed to gun down.

The boy nodded then pointed away, where the trees grew far more dense and the forest looked like it stretched on forever. "We have a home, Papa and I do. It's over those hills."
The truck bumped about on the normally unused dirt road. It had a while yet to travel before reaching the nearest sleepy town, especially considering how rocky the trip was. The path often weaved in and out of thicker and thinner patches of bare trees.
The men inside the cab of the truck were in the middle of a heated argument.

"What are you doing all the way out here?" Quinn asked as she looked to where he was pointing.
Ranger hurried forward. Keeping an eye out for anything that could stop the truck. As he did, his ear twitched and he looked off to the right of the road. He smiled, then stopped and pulled a small decoratively carved wooden piccolo looking instrument out of his pocket. He played it very quickly up and down several scales in a particular pattern. Then, stopped and waited.
... watching as a particularly large tree shifted and began to fall down over the road. A definate means to stop the truck.

"Papa was teaching me how to look for food at this time of year. We store up some for the winter, in case something goes wrong with our garden." Bobby looked up at her, worried if it was wrong to come this way or not, what if this was his fault?
Loud swearing came and shouts came from the cab of the truck as it skidded suddenly to a halt. They started arguing louder with each other, and the man in the front passenger seat got out to inspect the tree in front of them.

"That's smart. Gardens usually don't do well after the fall." she said, looking back at him.
Ranger moved through the tree quickly to get closer. He pulled out a small spyglass from one of his pockets, and aimed it at the back of the truck. Trying to see just what the hunters had caught, and if it was anything more than 'normal' wildlife.

The fawn nodded. "Some of our garden is inside. But, berry bushes don't grow well inside, so we came out here to find more."
The back had unlatched after the rocky road and sudden jolts of the truck.
Inside was a haphazardly roped up stag. Above the shoulders it was wrapped in a bloodied tarp, it's long antlers visible at the other end. The poachers looked to have been in a hurry. They kept shouting at each other as they tried to figure out what to do with the large tree blocking the path.

"Does your dad usually come out here to pick for berries?" she asked.
Ranger tilted his head as he looked at the buck. It was... very odd that they would have it's legs tied and it's head covered if it was a simple kill. He thought for a moment, then sighed and tilted his hat. Moving his hair so it was covering his ears again. Then, slid down the back of the tree and made his way over to the truck. Pulling something out of his pocket, then pulling a few pins out and putting them on his vest. He wasn't called Ranger for nothing...

"Only in the winter sometimes." The young fawn, though distracted, was slowly growing more anxious the longer time passed that his papa didn't come back.
Two of the men were out of the truck, and trying to shove at the tree together to see if it would budge.

The men turned in surprise to find the stranger standing behind them. The third one in the cab shook the truck with how much he moved to see where the man came from. *"Where did you come from-?" The larger of the two standing before him piped up, his voice rough and confused.

The boy nodded, blinking shyly up at her. "For a couple weeks in the winter. Papa thinks maybe five away."
One turned to look at the tree infront of them. "Oh.... right... it, scared the shit outta us."
"Won't budge though, so we need to find a way to move it." The other said deciding to keep cool, thinking they might be able to distract the ranger long enough-
"Maybe we need more men to move it?"
The third poacher exited the truck to approach them.

Suddenly the truck lurched, as something hard hit metal around the back of the truck. All three men, who all had exited the truck by now, nearly jumped out of their skins and spun around to stare at their pickup. One turned back toward the ranger suddenly appearing hostile. The second ran toward the bed of the pickup. The third appeared to be frozen by shock and fear.

The one who had turned toward him gave the ranger a scowl of a look and drew a hand gun. "Richy, get in the truck."
The paralyzed man looked more panicked than ever. "Shouldn't we.... but..."
"Shut up and get in the goddamn truck!" he barked, causing the other man to snap out of his deer-in-the-headlights look and move for the door of the truck. He got in and slammed it shut, looking worriedly out over the dash.
"You from around here? Then maybe you know that's not what we're plannin' to do." The armed man snapped, glaring at the stranger as he moved for the driver's side of the truck. "No way are we showin' this one to anyone."

"Oh dear... with that sort of reaction, one might think you all hit a person with your truck rather than simple illegal hunting." the man said with a faint smirk. At this point he knew the men weren't going anywhere even if they got in their truck. That should have been plenty of time for the 'fallen tree' to move it's roots up under the front of the truck and latch on.
"And now pointing a gun at a Ranger? Tisk.."

The armed man opened the driver side door and got in, still holding his gun ready. The calm attitude of this stranger was unsettling to say the least. He revved up the truck, urging the last man to get in the other side. They all started bickering again when they realized the truck wasn't moving from its spot, even after the gas petal was slammed. Another sharp clang could be heard from the bed of the truck.

The Ranger smiled, then pulled out his lute again. He whistled out a few more notes on it, then pocketed it again. The roots burst out of the ground. Now wrapping around the truck, it's doors, and partially lifting it off the ground. Trapping the men inside and fully keeping the car from going anywhere.
