Description
This is my Open Chest Binding Tutorial that many of my friends requested I make~In case I wasn't clear enough, for Step One place the tissue/gauze over your nipple. This will really help when taking off the tape.
For Step Two, try to pull the tape to flatten your chest as much as possible WITHOUT pulling your skin uncomfortably.
The binding isn't comfy at all, but excessive pulling can cause chest pain and redness inbetween your breasts.
For Step Three, it is optional because just pulling the tape to the side can be enough for most people.
I like to reduce shadow underneath my breasts for pictures so I like to pull upwards and to the side to achieve that look.
For Step Four, I use the turned over duct tape, but double sided tape works better.
Either way, just make sure that the fabric of the shirt you are using does not crumple when you put it against the tape. This will make the shirt look weird. Smooth the fabric over the tape and make it look more natural.
When removing, there will be some pain. Watch your skin when taking off the tape SLOWLY. I pull my skin in the opposite direction to reduce pull and it also reduces pain.
I've been told that baby oil also works well with removal, though I have not tried it myself.
Keep in mind that you have tiny hairs on your skin which can be pulled out when removing tape.
......Liek mai Alois Kimono?~ |D
(it's almost done~)
I would like to point out that, yes, this does hurt when taking off. I don't suggest using this method for normal cosplays (closed shirt) since duct tape can be rather painful and tedious to work with.
Also, I have experimented with other tapes and determined that Duct tape works the best for me.
But take note that some people are allergic to it and I suggest experimenting yourself before automatically using duct tape and causing yourself unneeded pain.
This method works for many people, but depending on your cup size the results may vary.
I myself am a C-D cup and require a little more tape and pulling in certain directions to acquire the correct look.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me~
You can use heavy duty sports tape that is designed for your skin too! It allows your skin to breathe and you sweat less, so the adhesive will last longer.
This is a wonderful technique though. My twin sister used this years ago for my open-shirt Sasuke cosplay.
Um, it helps if you take a hot shower and then the adhesive on the tape will wear off. You'll still have to peel slowly but for the most part it will just come off.
NEW WARNING: DO NOT LEAVE DUCT TAPE ON FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME. I have known this for a long time and the warning is because DUCT TAPE EATS SKIN.
It has also come to my attention (with the help of and my own recent personal experiences) that with the prolonged wear of duct tape you may get blisters. I accidentally forgot about how long I had been wearing my binding for while at Anime Expo this year and I suffered the consequences. Some of the skin on the edge of where the duct tape was located had ripped off skin and caused blisters to form. PLEASE be careful and make sure that you do NOT leave on the duct tape binding for long periods of time, how long that is, I don't know. I only know that when I first ripped my skin I had the duct tape on for about 11 hours, give or take a few hours. This is much too long, I've realized. Try and limit this binding to ONLY open chest cosplays and please be sure to take caution when removing!! I love you all and don't wish to see any of you going through the pain I'm going through now (no it's not severe in the slightest, but it does get uncomfortable on occasion.)

HELL. NO.
That is, of course, if you want to rip your skin off and then get blisters and bloody patches of skin which lead to scarring.

Try something like sports tape, however, it is NEVER a good idea to leave tape on that long.

you made a great tutorial I was thinking about the same idea for a long time now, but duct tape never came in mind
I was thinking about some vest-ish thingy but that turned out to be a bad idea

Thanks for this. I'm actually planning this same cosplay. Although I think I'll try sports tape instead of duct tape.

Found my problem there. =u=;;;;
I use duct tape, but I usually rip after trying to gently pull...Guess I need to just be patient with it. And try the baby oil.
I found this through the one *ChibiMitzy put up. xD

Not really, but you can feel a little strain on the skin sometimes..
I've had my skin torn from wearing it too long, but that normally doesn't happen xD

A friend of mine told me to use athletic tape instead of duct tape cause duct tape hurts or something like that.
Thank you for telling me btw~

Well all tape will hurt if it's strong enough to hold your breasts, but athletic tape is much safer than duct tape!

(Not the person who made this but still want to respond) Yeah it does kinda hurt, but when you get used to it, it's worth it! But the bigger your breast are the worse it is so....I don't have very large ones so...It really depends

It would work, but I can't guarantee you the greatest results.
and considering the fact that you'll have to pull the tape much tighter you might be uncomfortable and the tape might not hold very well..
But it doesn't hurt to try?

You're very welcome!
But I suggest using normal binding methods and not a taping method for closed shirt cosplays (such as Alois in Wonderland)
Alois' outfit (assuming you're doing a pink version of Ciel's outfit) is closed in the front and you can use a binding vest/ace bandages/waist cincher/etc instead of tape ;D

I cant handle the pink. *sweats* It hurts my eyes even to wear, but I still think it looks cute on other people. :3 And It also shall work for my Draco cosplay! :3 Ab's have to be flashy flash for the one.

I have another comment to contribute, the tape can blister the skin if it is worn for a prolonged period of time. ;___;
I dont really know how to stop it form happening though, maybe frequently changing the tape? Or...I dunno. ;________;
But I wore the same tape the whole day of the cone and well, I didnt get that off without getting some battle wounds.
-sniffle- (Im glad I put some safe tissue on my numnums! They are still intact thank goodness! lol)

yirico In reply to DorkySther [2011-07-06 03:25:14 +0000 UTC]
yep.. I found that out about 3 days ago.. I left the tape on WAY longer than I normally do and I just shredded my skin since I was too tired to soak it URGH.
I feel like such an idiot right now Dx
I'll add your warning to the description for sure.
I already knew that Duct Tape eats skin so it's not good to leave on for long periods of time, but I have never heard of blisters coming about from duct tape as well.. hmm.. something to figure out, I guess.

DorkySther In reply to yirico [2011-07-06 04:00:37 +0000 UTC]
Soak it when taking it off? Or periodically soaking it during the con?? ><""
At least we are both feeling each others pain. ;______; -pats back-
And I didnt use duct tape, I used masking/artist tape which did the job I wanted it to, it flattened well. But, it tore my friend and I up. D; I guess duct tape doesnt leave blisters but masking tape does??? @_@
Anywho, I also have to say that you look lovely in your most recent cosplay pictures. Great job. ^_^

yirico In reply to DorkySther [2011-07-06 06:34:18 +0000 UTC]
IF you shower or soak the duct tape it will melt the adhesive and make it easier to remove.
I don't know if that's a good or bad thing *sigh*
No, Duct tape leaves blisters, I guess they all do if left on for too long..
Oh, thank you very much!!! >w<

DorkySther In reply to yirico [2011-07-06 15:00:09 +0000 UTC]
I will make sure to do that next time. Though I think I still would have had blisters if I had removed the tape after taking a shower because while wearing the tape, the sweat did something to the adhesive. I felt the tape get from comfortable to "ripping-me-apart" mode. D; Maybe it was because I would sweat on and off and it would then dry periodically making the tape even tighter?? Maybe that was it???? gyahh...-confuzzled- lol
Well, I guess this is just a trial and error thing. xD
And you are welcome!!

yirico In reply to DorkySther [2011-07-06 17:52:08 +0000 UTC]
maybe the bacteria from the sweat caused the blisters or something, probably would have had them regardless. Because I've never had blisters from binding before, but I've also never worn open chest binding in 100 degree weather LOL
We'll have to figure out a happy medium, I guess.
