This is late, but the reason they give them the big balls is because in Japan there was this technique of making gold paper which was made by hitting a ball of gold and tanuki skin was used cause it was very good at the job and that’s the correlation because gold balls is also what testicles are called in Japan and gold balls + tanuki = tanuki with big gold balls. I might have some bits wrong, but that’s more or less how I remember it
