Description This is a new piece I've just started. It is nearly life size 2/3 scale, and I'm using Prisma Color pencils for the first time.

We got back from our holiday travels to find out fridge had burned out (lucky it didn't burn the house down, DOH), and we had to unload a pantry cabinet onto the table I use as my easle [this piece is like 2/3 life-size]; so I hope to get setup again this weekend after we get that all taken care of.

Naw, the freezer side stayed working, and only lost a few things in the fridge because it kept cool enough not to spoil much. It was just a freaking HASSLE from hell to get a new one. Turns out they pretty much only carry fridges in stainless steel now, and if ya want white ya have to order them. So we went three places before we found one at Sears that could deliver the next day. Then the one they brought was busted. Then the next day they delivered but wouldn't push it up a ramp we have in the back to get into the kitchen. Drama drama drama. I finally had a go buy an appliance dolly and get a buddy to help me push the thing up the ramp. This is why I do all my own work around the house, can't get anybody to actually DO anything any more. ANYWAY... ha ha ha, more info that ya needed but that's been my 2012 so far!

how do you like the prisma color pencils vs. anything you've used before? I can't find a favorite, but I seem to keep getting (as gifts) the cheapie ones that the tip breaks off right after you've sharpened them. Frustrating!

I like them a lot! I've had my large set of 144 since design school back in '90. I have to replace most of the major colors, but like having the big box for the seldom used colors.

For color work I actually like Prisma Color pencils better than other media I've worked with like oil, acrylics, water colors; but then I'm sure it's more a matter of experience. Since I have a drawing background, I immediately took to Prisma, where I didn't the other media. I'd really like to work up to oil again some day, but just trying to get back into my drawing for 2012!

Regarding them breaking after sharpening, I recommend the Prisma Color brand sharpener. When I switched to it, I had a *whole* lot less breakage. I'm sure it has something to do with the angle of the cut on normal sharpeners. I also use an Exacto blade for sharpening AND for color mixing.

Yeah, the face prings a piece to life, but an interesting body can really add a level of excitement that makes a drawing more visceral.
