Description "You cannot talk about creation, if you haven't created yourself"

I had quite hard times, when I drew this (mostly in school, during boring classes)... I had a couple of really fierce inspirations, when drew the sketch and started working on it, but in a while I just went into a routine: lesson - I pull out my pen and work - drawing. I was wandering about ~Doc-Hammer 's gallery/scraps/journal and got really inspired in doing something really worth showing. I kept repeating a quote from his journal: "your best work is the work you're working on right now.." It really helped. After looking at such sites (here at DA) like ~Doc-Hammer 's I just want to succeed till such level... I just want myself to be pleased with my works fully, but everytime there's something wrong with it. As it is with this one. I guess it's not good to be happy about something entirely.. maybe it's even against nature.. either you've reached the level of God (impossible) or the ceiling of your arrogance (very likely).

Anyway... this is something, that I've worked on really serious, basically with everything I have... yet, when I now look at it I see many places where I could've done better:
1) the background is just ridiculous, though I've never been good with backgrounds...
2) those little weird looking things in the corners are so obvious space-fillers -_-''
3) that crown on top could be different, Queen-of-England-like, more details...
4) I have to work on my skull shapes, though that's really the best I can do for now
5) that crown on girl's head - that eye and crosses - just wrong... I should have worked more with the alchemical symbols
6) anatomy of the skeleton is just... *slaps herself* the breast-bone should be a lot shorter and those ribs are not much rib-like
7) guts - I think they should be a bit darker yet I'm not sure...
8) the chains seem wry, but that's understandable, since I worked with my freinds nudging me all the time and in some classes - on my knees
9) I could have done better on hooks, though.. they are very wry..
10) the scarf doesn't seem like cloth.. I might have used the wrong texture..
11) It's quite hard to notice scars on her hips, I must've overdone the stippling
12) the lower cross seems out of place... different texture might've worked...
13) it's practically impossible to notice, that her eyes are sewed up...

I'll leave the symbolisms up to you.. I'll just note one of them (I'm not sure of you can understand it) - the scars on her hips are scars, that are left after cutting her ovaries out. Pretty fucked up, but I think that you get the idea (note the title).

any other criticism besides the mistakes I listed is VERY welcome

This is fantastic.. I wouldn't change a single thing about this piece.. I love the border and the stippling work is spot on.. This piece is even better on full view.. That is when the details really shine like the sewed up eyes and the scars on the hips.. Just remember that certain details are meant to be seen on first look. Sometimes the finer things are seen after really exploring a piece.. Im not sure if you have ever seen the work of Alex Grey but he works on a very large scale and he tends to hide alot of symbolism in his work.. I had the opportunity to tour his gallery with him and upon looking at the atomic christ he pointed out something that I never saw in the print that I owned and that was a single mustard seed in the center of the piece.. So keep doing what you do and continue to grow with every piece that you do..

zeloco In reply to BeardoMcWeirdo [2007-03-31 21:47:12 +0000 UTC]

wow.. I've never heard of Alex before, but I saw some when I checked him up in google...
I love using symbolisms, but I never actually thought of hiding then, though that is a great idea...
I know what you mean about putting certain things first, but when it comes to drawing my mind just blacks out.. as if I was afraid to loose the idea at the moment... all I can do is take the same piece and redo it all over again fixing the mistakes that I noted and even more that I notice now, when I look at it. I don't do it just because my mind is filled with a lot of other ideas that just want to break out and I just cannot stop or pause the flow..
Thank you so much for commenting - it's so rare these days

not every female in the world has 10 rib bones...they might have....14?

i tried counting mine for some reason but there was to much fat in the way and i'm ticklish.

I've tried counting my own as well... though I get mixed in the middle and loose the count, so I dunno how much I have.... I guess I should check out some anatomy books or something....

do males have the same amount? i still tried counting mine but i gave up and nearly had to change my pants.

doesn't really matter how many ribs people have.

I really like this. It is a great picture, a little bit hellraiser. I like the chains and the way the hooks have caused ripples in the flesh that they are pulling.

It's beautiful! ^^ Reminds me of those old Russian criminal tattoos. You've handled the massive scale of the background incredibly well and I love the symmetry of the whole thing, the arrangement of the hooks and chains in particular

The ovarian scars are a reeally nice touch - very disturbing! hehe

the chains are by far my favourite part of this, I've wanted to do something 'chain/flesh tugging' sortof imagine, but I really doubt my success, so haven't bothered trying.... Also the head at the top of the imagine, with it'shair weaving through the skulls.... LOVE it. This is fantastic work, the shading is awesome, well done.

true. criticism is a good thing in some ways but for others its bad because if you have a great style and change it because of criticism then thats not good.
