Raphael was made the Ascended Yveltal just over 200 years ago, and in his time was a deadly and powerful fellow who would lash out fiercely against anyone who challenged his strength or his people. He seemed to grow more mellow over the years, to the point where for the past 34 years, he'd gone into hiding. Although an Ascended choosing to separate themselves isn't unheard of, even the Creation Trio have kept some form of communication with the rest of the world more often than Raphael did. That much silence made a lot of people believe he disappeared so that he could pass away, alone and in silence.
With so much time away from the world, nobody knows what the real Raphael would be like if he was still alive. This angry old man with a soft heart for youngsters might be the real Raphael, or he could be so far off the mark that nobody could believe it was him... if anyone had any frame of reference to go by. Regardless, he definitely has an impressive control over his natural powers of Destruction, enough so to be a serious threat to the whole guild. If he really is Raphael, though, then who is the Darkrai calling himself Midas?
~~~
After his capture in Ailes Canyon, Raphael has become a prisoner of the Duoneuma Guilds. He and Midas claim that they are both genuinely the Ascended Pokémon they say they are, and their claims seem even more substantiated thanks to the support from the Zii'gal from the country of Ramush, but the Zii'gal are also acting suspiciously and it's become even harder for the guild from Whisper Falls to tell who they can trust and who they can't.
Raphael is set on staying in the Guild's good graces though, even though he still makes a fuss now and then about being able to do his job - which only makes sense! If he's acting the part, then he'd want everyone to believe that he really wants to be the Lord of Death and use his power to escort the souls of Pokémon who have passed away into the afterlife. And if he's genuine, then it's true that he wouldn't be able to do that with the Psionic Cuffs sealing his powers, thus leaving those lost souls in limbo.
Raphael the Mighty behaves like a great-grandpa sort. His manners and way of speaking are based on a time period from before most of the Duoneuma Guild were even born, which means the culture gap is pretty significant. However, he does seem to be genuinely wise and caring, even welcoming physical touch from other Pokémon and giving advice to those who ask for it. He does at least SEEM trustworthy, but still... without him being honest about what his ultimate plan is, there's a risk that he might still be acting a part until he thinks the time is right to strike and leave the Guild vulnerable again.
Still, his strength was enough to challenge the might of the Duoneuma Guild and Violet herself, and in the same way that Violet's power could have destroyed the Guild he seems to have a strange ability beyond what most would expect from a Destruction Pokémon - arguably even the opposite.
How he talks:
"You bring my natural rival into this place, attack my consort and then have the gall to claim that you are not attempting to destroy me? I will not suffer your insults to my wisdom again."
"This is my domain, and you are NOT welcome in it!"
"Oh child... I weep for you. To be so happy, so innocent... you would have such a vibrant life ahead of you were it not for the destructive path set before you by the ones calling themselves your guild..."
"It fascinates me how deep the stigma of death as a force to be feared is. You of the youngest generation have yet to learn how valuable these things you call 'evil' truly are. Think of it, then: what value is there to life if there is no death? If you could all live on into eternity, then what would it matter to steal, lie and cheat rather than to offer grace, love and protection to one another? In the world to which the dead are taken, you might call it a library. In the afterlife I can look upon the lives of vast billions of those who have come before us, and in all I have seen the branches that spread from their actions to influence the lives of so many more. This is why I hold my title so dear."
