I decided to try a different brush this time that's actually emulating a real brush to see if it would work better with my linework. My hands aren't very steady so I tend to draw in short strokes or sweeping curves/lines when able, usually many times while hammering undo until I get a line or line section I'm satisfied with, then go back and fix the intersection points.

I think this is passable, but I'm not particularly convinced. I'll keep trying things and see if I can find something that works better for me.
