Retrode 2 review
The Retrode 2 is a game cartridge reader that out of the box is compatible with Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis and mega drive game cartridges and has ports on the reader that will allow you to connect up to two Sega Genesis/mega drive or two Super Nintendo controllers to the device. This allows you play your older games without the need of extra adaptorsNow for the setup. Just insert your game cartridge into the retrode, connect the controller to one of the ports if you have console controller, and connect Retrode to the pc via provided usb cable. Once you've got it connected start your emulator and select the game file from the retrode to start playing.
Testing. After playing some classic games Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past, and Starfox I've found that you can not save your game directly to the cartridge but will save it to your emulator's save file. By default the Retrode is set to read only mode to protect both the game and save data on the cartridge in case of a bad emulator. Personally I would just leave this alone as there is no telling how well the cartridge will handle new data being written from a pc. However if you want you can read on how to change this setting on the Retrode web site.
Some will tell me that Starfox doesn't have a save file system and you would be correct however I was testing to see if the redtrode would handle SNES games that have the super fx chip and no problems found.
Now the Retrode has the option of using adaptor plug-ins that allow you to connect more game cartages to you pc. You have the option to purchase additional adaptors to connect N64, Gameboy, or Sega master cartages to the retrode reader. I've tested the N64 plugin and have found no issues other than the same ones I've found for the SNES cartridges.
Final thoughts.
If you're looking to play classic games but don't have a console or are worried that the site you've been downloading the roms from might get taken down. I would recommend Retrode for you.
