For as long as the Contessa has existed, so has Willem. He started out as a candy maker in the year 5 BCE and when the children of his town started disappearing because of the Contessa, he followed them and soon became trapped in the Circus and has been an adversary of the Contessa ever since and living equally for as long as she has. When the kids of the story arrive, he guides them through each candy land with the promise of getting home, but unfortunately, the kids are getting picked off in each land so they must hurry or none will be left to escape.
