Hailing from the Water Colonies, Katara has had a hard life with being the daughter of the Southern Lord of the Sea, Hakoda. She and her brother Sokka were forced to carry on a fake way of acting in real life. Katara's life took a turn when her father openly opposed the most powerful businessman in the world, Ozai. This action meant retaliation in the form of the death of Hakoda's wife and Katara and Sokka's mother, Kya. This action would not stand and Hakoda after finding out that murder was the least of what Ozai was up to, built together a group to take down Ozai since they could not do it by normal means. This left Katara and Sokka growing up without either of their parents at such a young age.

Years later, Katara and Sokka moved from the Water Colonies to the Fire Metropolis and tried to live a normal life, but the actions of the Inferno Trinity kept rearing their ugly heads in Katara's neighborhood and she couldn't stand by anymore. Taking some materials from the costume department at her university, Katara took inspiration from an old Fire Nation legend and crafted the hero identity of the Painted Lady and fought back. Things were tough at first, but Katara's actions inspired Sokka to join in heroics as the Tribesman. Katara would go on to ally herself with even more heroes and even form a team up of sorts with the hero known as The Blue Spirit, despite not knowing his identity, the Blue Spirit has proven himself a great hero and worthy teammate, but Katara does wish that he might trust her with his identity like she trusted him with knowing her first name.

Katara uses her waterbending in many combat and healing forms and has hidden vials of paints that she uses to blind her enemies, use as a way to track them, or put up her symbol on locations to make criminals afraid to come around.
