Description I'm not really one for avatars (the most I've done with mine is remove the face), but I'm launching a resource group this week and needed an icon. I'm new to pixel art (and digital animation for that matter) and wanted to try an ambitious first project, so this took quite a long time. But. It was so much fun!

I've been putting this together for about the past 10 hours, nonstop, overnight. I just couldn't stop, I kept having new ideas I wanted to create. Pixel art is so shiny. There are so many options but so many limitations, it's such an exquisite practice. I definitely want to be doing more of this, but not for a little bit, I need to regain the ability to focus my eyes.

So about the icon itself. This was created for the group #Forum-UTILITIES , a dynamic resource for the DeviantART forums (or it will be in a few days, more on that later). I grabbed two of the devART icons that represented the idea of the group (the forum symbol from icons-small-modules.gif ) (the config tools from mc3.gif ) and combined them to create the symbol for the group. DeviantART traditionally puts the wrench on the left of an icon to indicate that it is some sort of support or management (you can see this in the Manage Deviations or Manage Portfolio pages), so I decided this would be an apt way to create a support symbol for the forums. I wanted a button format for the full icon, because it just looks nice. I referenced the icons for #fella and #printscommunity to teach myself how to make the fancy beveled edges.

But then came the narrative. I had to show the meeting of the symbols and the creation of the group. Thus, animation. The little emotes were built from scratch, and they were great fun. They aren't the best, but I zoomed way in on a few emoticons to get an idea for how they worked (the primary sphere never changes). The hands are the best though, they just fly around like mad.

Inspiration for the building scene is from eyezmaze .

EARTHQUAKE. That took a while.

About the group itself. #Forum-UTILITIES is designed to provide a location to host commonly requested resources for the forums. Ideally, this is in the form of dynamic stickies. Currently Guidelines stickies on the forums are locked and infrequently updated; this system will allow users to maintain their own stickies (and potential make them more relevant and useful than the static ones). Our current project is updating the Common Suggestions sticky in the Suggestions Forum, after that we'll be putting up posts for the common technical questions in Art Scene.

You can take a look at the group now if you would like, but as of yet it only plays host to a few structuring drafts. (No content has been put up yet.) The group should launch within the next week.

Special thanks to ^vanmall for being the wonderfully inspirational Pixel Art GM. It was through a conversation with him that I became intrigued in this art form.

Tools :
1. Adobe Photoshop CS4
I was only using the Animation panel in Photoshop, I didn't have any other software that rendered to GIF. I have a feeling that I used far too many layers though. If anyone has technique tips (quick rotations? -), I would love to hear them.

Glad to inspire!

So - it's a bit after the fact but ... what was your idea? How did it turn out?

I'm glad you liked it.

Excuse me, is an idea of my plans, the only one who knows it is the "Uni-Mario" (castlecrasherssl.blogspot.com owner) and I intend to not tell it to anyone, so ... I'm sorry. And honestly what encouraged me the dolls was dropping the little bar of forum.

I haven't heard from you in a while .

Thank you, it is pretty cute, don't worry though, the I'll be working on some more gruesome ones before too long. I have to determine the content though ...

Or maybe something gruesome aaand cute?! XD *nudgenudge* *hinthint* hm, I just googled "cute gruesome" and I found the naughty bear game. Have you seen the trailer for it? It really is frightening and cute all at the same time.. O.o... I kind like when the one bear beats the other bear with a bat.. it looks so squishy..

I love the animation and the way you made this icon look absolutely amazing! Though, I noticed your filesize is 113 kb due to the very elaborate animation and group icons have a limit of 15 kb...
That being said: for a first pixel piece this is absolutely a-ma-zing. I'm not even capable of making animations like these yet and I've been making pixels for about 6 months now.

It's way over the limit, I know . (Actually, I think for groups it's 30kb.) I can get it down to 29kb and a bit if I switch to 16 colors 100% lossy, but that's unfortunate. As such I just decided to submit it full quality (256 colors, lossless) and use it as a stamp. I am working on a shortened version (static logo - emote bounces off of the icon - - emote rolls off the screen one edge falls - wrench picks it back up and holds it in place - shine - wrench fade) for the actual icon.

Thanks so much, I really appreciate it . It was excellent, I got to put all the snippets of theory from my Drawing For Motion class into practice in a tiny little exact medium. So the Anticipation + Action + Follow-Through relationship happens one pixel at a time. It makes it really easy to control. I got lucky by planning the earthquake elements though, it meant the emotes could be a little choppy without too much distraction. On the next one my goal will definitely be smooth, consistent movement.

I'm awful at modeling though, I'm going to have to read ^vanmall 's tutorials so that I can create my own structures.

I'm thinking I might do something with color theory.
I am intrigued by the idea of making a longer animation though. I have the unfortunate urge to tell one of the classics in emote form. Les Miserables in 50px square, that would be something.

*late response is late*

Ah, I guess that that would make the most sense and I think this would make for a lovely stamp. Your idea for the actual icon also sounds really good, so I'll be looking forward to seeing a slightly simplified version of this piece then. And it's great when you can implement those things you learnt in other disciplines and take that knowledge with you when trying something new.

As far as ^vanmall 's tutorials go: I've been reading them a lot lately and I really can't wait to start pixeling my first big piece, though that'll have to wait just a bit longer I'm afraid. And if you have the idea for "Les Miserables": just do it. if you can think it, you can do it.

Late response all around.

I should be putting up that shortened animation in a bit. Currently though, I'm working on a stamp set for #ProjectComment ! It's pretty grand, there's one stamp for the group itself, and then one for giving and one for receiving. The theme is a paper airplane (it's a message, but playful). It has a comment (icon) written on it in the give stamp, it flies across and completes the logo in the group stamp, and then lands and is open in the receive stamp. If you embed them together, they are timed such that it plays as one seamless animation!

After that, I've decided to play with some modeling before tackling too large a piece. I have a story about Matroshka planned, inspired by the Tchaikovsky sequence in the original Fantasia.

I'll be keeping an eye on your gallery for your pixel work. (I love your icons, so cute.)

I can't wait to see that stamp then, though I'm sure it'll be as lovely as this one is! And the story you have planned sounds fascinating as well. :3
And thanks! Though when it comes to animations I think I can learn a whole lot from you.
