Description Midnight Light Triplets

Taken the same place as Mountain Strike. Really an incredible storm. We were probably much closer than we should have been though.

Edited for loveliness. Well, cropped and desaturized a bit. That's all.

One big question is, how much do you want to spend?

It's not the cost of your equipment so much as your own personal talent that makes a picture good or not. Although simple cameras will eventually make you realize the limitations of your equipment and hinder you. But an expensive camera does not make a beautiful photograph. I'd say start with a compact and move up from there if you enjoy it.

Incredible. I'm always impressed with lightning shots, it seems like it would be impossible to shoot one since they are so fast.

Heh, I'd always thought so before. When you start to get into photography though you learn about shutter speed and whatnot, so you just set it on a long shutter speed, and can catch anything within that time period. Film cameras on the other hand you can just leave on for as long as you like until the lightning strikes, close the shutter, and then open it again for another shot. Quite handy.

Combine that with a low F Stop, and you'll take in whatever light in that period, and you can snap some pretty cool shots. I was just lucky enough to get 3 in this single shot.

Brilliant lightning shot, nice background too - quite often there's a lot of background distractions in lightning shots, but here the natural landscape is great.
I think the cropping improved it too.

Yeah, although I really liked the reflection, the crop just didn't work like that. Though it changes a lot depending on whom you ask. I acutally haven't gotten to much distraction in my lightning shots yet... guess I'm just lucky!

Are you sure that one of those isn't the older sibling? lol. This is really nice. Maybe a little bit darker, but I do like the blue...so I dont know. That one burst of light is really interesting....can't decide whether I like it or not.

Nah, he just eats more than the other two . I origionaly thought this shot was just 'okay' but I got a Lustre print of it for a charity auction and totally fell in love with it in a silver frame... I had no idea what a simple frame could do for an image... I made need one for myself now. ><

Thanks for all the info! Nice detailed reply.

I'll give it another try and be more creative about where I stand. I don't know why cropping the lights out didn't occur to me O_o especially because I can crop them with the camera beforehand. hehe

Thanks again!

That is some gorgeous lightning. I had a couple storms this summer but I never had good results before so I didn't bother.

I know the trick is to give the longest brightest exposure you can get, but I'm never lucky enough to get close enough to the action, or to have a picture with lightning and not headlights streaking through it. hehe

Zilchius In reply to nferadesign [2006-08-26 09:04:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it can be a problem. I live right in the area so I know of quite a few good, dark, open, areas. Though this spot was actually entirely new to me. We drove off into the mountians this time and found a little town and took shelter in the archway of an LDS church. From there it was the perfect spot to view the storm from, nice and close, but protected from the rain/lightning.

So far as exposure, and you can see I used an exposure time of 15 seconds and a focal aprature of 2.8. Sometimes I'll set the speed slower, or the aprature higher depending on light content, or how active the storm is... but those settings tend to work out best for me. In this case I did have a few headlight/taillight streaks through some of the images from the interstate just beyond where we were. You can paint these out pretty easy with Photoshop, or (being as most lightning is in the sky anyhow) just crop them out.

My greatest tool in shooting lightning thus far though, has been a tripod.
