Description

Hoo-boy. This is my first ever draw-it-again, and I have to say I had a lot of fun with it.

It has been a little over 4 years since I drew the original Trill:

I have always struggled to find a style that I call my own. I tend to fall back on my impressionistic sketching, but run into a huge wall when it comes to drawing people, or anything super stylized. My lines have energy to them and they want to be free. So trying to do anything anime-esque forces me to bring some control to the chaos, and really put effort into faces.

In the original Trill, I struggled with Ash's mouth for an eternity. I still struggled in this version too, but eventually made something that I'm at least halfway happy with. Maybe in the next 4 years I'll master it. :'D Baby steps.

One of the other main differences, especially in the past year, if the art program I use. Previouly, I was limited to PaintshopPro's push/smudging tools for blending, which I relied on waaaaaay too much. I now use Sai, which gave me the pressure sensitivity and blending options I wished for.

Finally, tone and emotion. I have always imagined Ash as a very passive looking character with an underlying, burning intensity. I started this drawing with the super dark sclera as the original, but decided to lighten it about halfway an add more light reflection. So while the original Trill had more intensity and intimidating qualities between the eyes and textures, I wanted this one to show the thoughtful, restrained qualities that I have wanted Ash to show, and that my art has taken on. I guess I want it to show that I can use intensity and texture when it is needed, but if you use it all the time, it loses it's force. I hope that makes sense.

Anywho. I hope you all enjoy.

Here is the original written excerpt included in the original post:

Something is amiss.

Standing upon the hill overlooking the city, you could see the smoke coming off of the factories, masses of bodies milling through the streets, and the high trill of...

...Wait. That wasn't the sound of birds.

Where were all of the birds? Their calls used to flood the air, and now for some reason they were all gone. The sound still permeated, like a hum but more dissonant.

If you were to blink, you would miss it. Only outside of the city might you notice the minuscule changes happening to the buildings. That tower that used to stand next to the library was now a few feet further away. Somehow none of the people standing outside seemed to notice as even they themselves shifted. As if a thick cloud had covered the sun, that area became a little darker. The sound was now gone.

Ash's dark eyes darted across the rows of buildings...No other changes. Slumping against a tree, he tried to piece together this madness. He rubbed his face and pulled up his hood. The sun was beginning the go down now...Who knows what the city will look like by morning?

Across the city another pair of dark eyes pierced the skies and fell upon Ash.

"He is beginning to notice."
