I don't know how popular this is around the world but one of my favourite childhood books was "Airborn" by Kenneth Oppel. It was a story that was in a parallel universe on earth where instead of airplanes, blimps became the commercial travel vehicle and it took place in a sort of 19th century kind of era (at least clothing and attitudes-wise). In there there was a vehicle called the Ornithopter (I think) and that was a part of the inspiration for this sketch as well as da Vinci's flying machine drawings.
