okay so the gem on the left is my gemsona Tanzanite and the gem on the right is my sister's gemsona Galena

Part of their backstory is that eventually Tanzanite wants to get the heck off Homeworld after witnessing some atrocity that hits really close to home for her (haven't quite decided what it's gonna be yet I've got several ideas), but Galena's like "naw fam I mean things aren't great but I'm no traitor." Well Tanzanite really wants to leave but there's no way in hell she'd leave without her 'sister' even if said sister is being a total butthead, so she agrees to stick around in hopes of being able to convince Galena to leave later on.

Time passes and their relationship grows increasingly strained as the two of them push their sides of the argument increasingly harder. (actually Tanzanite does most of the pushing, Galena mostly just glowers and gets increasingly colder towards her) At some point during all this, one of Tanzanite's rivals (Holly Blue Chalcedony, who I have drawn but not lined or colored but will eventually) makes a formal, public accusation of treason. As a result, Tanzanite's already shaky standing as one of Homeworld's leading gemeticists comes under super intense fire since she's already been under fire from higher-ups before.

Galena's the only gem who's around Tanzanite a lot and is thus the only gem who can really prove or disprove these claims. So yeah. Things aren't looking great for purple me. Galena ends up backing Holly Blue Chalcedony's claims, thus condemning Tanzanite and destroying their trust in each other. Fortunately Tanzanite's been planning to escape with two other friends of hers (Chrysocolla and Emerald), so she figures that they can just carry out their plans ahead of schedule. Unfortunately she was kinda planning on having swayed Galena to their side by then... so that complicates matters a lot. Now, she still cares about Galena and doesn't want to leave without her, so what's a gem to do?

Challenge her to a duel, of course. She sends what basically amounts to a warning message to Galena saying that either she can apologize, come quietly, and they can all escape together with no hard feelings... or Galena can put her money where her mouth is for once and they can duke it out to decide what happens to the both of them. If this is beginning to smack of the prelude to the Burr-Hamilton duel, then congratulations you've caught my drift.

It's actually a funny set of parallels since personality-wise Tanzanite mirrors Hamilton and Galena mirrors Burr, but Tanzanite would be in Burr's position and Galena in Hamilton's for the following set of events since Galena's the one doing the slander/backstabbing and Tanzanite's the one proposing they settle things with violence. I'm shameless trash, I know.

Galena decides to take her chances with Tanzanite in a fight... so yeah, this picture is basically the final moments before the battle starts and things get ugly. Mind you, this battle isn't supposed to end in shattering, just poofing. Both parties are aware of that, so the purpose of the battle is mostly to force the loser into doing what the winner wants since they can't exactly protest when they're bubbled in their gem. If Tanzanite wins (hint hint she does), then Galena will be forced to leave Homeworld with them and can't really go back. If Galena wins, then the unfortunate Tanzanite gets handed over to the proper authorities at some point (whether by Galena or in a court of law) and more than likely gets shattered. Obviously things wouldn't be too interesting or happy if Galena won, so Tanzanite wins not so much because I think I'm amazing and should never be beaten at anything, but because she has to for story purposes.

WOW so that was a lot more text than I intended... this was just a late-night doodle and I ended up writing a fucking novel

welp expect more of this type of stuff

I've got a whole story lined out but I'm not gonna make it into a comic strip or anything

probably just single pictures or short standalone-ish pieces that tell the story in non-chronological strips or just dump info who knows

(also if you're wondering what the heck is up with Galena's arm that's her weapon-- she got a big ole arm-mounted plasma cannon)
